Hi Guys,

I have been using BDE for quite a while now.

but I heard a lot of negative remarks about BDE like it is too slow etc.

Now i want to try using ADO (using access).

are there any real advantages of ADO over BDE and is BDE really slower then ADO?

hi

- BDE must be installed on every machine
- W2K has ADO installed
- WinNT, 95,98 may have ADO, if not, free to download and distribute
- ADO is from Microsoft so they are behind it - is this good or bad?

- fundamental differences:
- ADO exposes the underlying data source
- BDE provides a common level of functionality (if the underlying datasource doesn't support it, the BDE implements it)
- EG BDE supports transaction processing against Paradox and dBase but ADO does not.

- ADO is a std part of the op. system adn will become more important.
- ADO gives access to whole range of data, not just databases. Via ADO, can access spreadsheets, email, webpages etc.

In general
- if you're using and MS specific db, use ADO
- if using PAradox or dBASE, use BDE
- with older vers of Access, use ADO or BDE but ADO (using Jet driver) is probably better
- Oracle, eg can go direct with the BDE via ODBC or ADO
- BDE/Oracle is well tested
- ADO/Oracle only supports scrollable cursors with client side cursors.
