Comment line affects presentation

Under what circumstances, if any, could a comment line of the form

<!--**************************-->

affect the behaviour of the page. I have found that unpredictable behaviour with positioning of a div and the display of spurious text can be eliminated by removing one such line (IE6). I have validated the HTML and no errors reported.

You could be seeing an example of IEs whitespace bug.

Try replacing the comment with a blank line rather than remove it completley.
Also try it with no line breaks in the source code around that comment.

Another good thing is to make sure that your comment tags are coded properly:

<!-- this comment will work perfectly -->
<!----- this comment might fail in some browsers ---->

I try to delimit the comment tags with a space right after/in front of them for best cross-browser compatibility.

Thank you for your input. I found that the format of the comment appeared to have little effect on the problem and, ultimately, the simplest solution was just to get rid of it! The space delimited suggestion could prove worthwhile.
