Command Prompt will not open

When I type in the Run CMD, or if I click on Command Prompt icon it will open the window and then disappear. I am not sure if this next thing is related either, but I can not go to

http://www.microsoft.com

but I can go to any other site that I have tried.

Any Ideas. The CMD is what has me really confused.

sounds like it might be malware to me, have you scanned for anything yet? also- does the "command" prompt work? (type command as opposed to cmd).

Have a look at thread 779-1072291, sounds like a very similar problem. Especially BCastner's reference on malware - sounds like cmd.exe has been replaced or corrupted.

The only other possibility is some corruption in the registry for the file association entries for .EXE files. Following the malware repair instuctions will workaround the issue, but try Doug Knox's direct repair for .EXE or other file corruption first:
