I am using winxp pro and before now I have never had a problem with getting commands at the command prompt to work but when i try any command now I get this is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
if anybody knows what i can do to fix this it would be very much appreciated

Has something happened to your path statement variable? If you go to advanced tab of system proprties and click on Environment Variables button, should be system one called path. Should be something like:-

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\system32\WBEM;C:\Program

(may be more entries, depending on software you have installed - but those should be there. You can edit them back in if they're not).

at command line try path and see if it gives the current path.

whatever command you are trying you could give the full path and see if it works, which would also point to a path problem, c:\windows\command\commandline

and does dir work?

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

note - the C:\Progam shouldn't be in path, was a typo!
