I am trying to do a colleague a favour by fixing their very old home machine.

I have managed to install Windows 98 but on the firt reboot i get the following error

Type the name of the command intrepreter (eg c:\windows\command.com
c>

No matter what I type it wont let me in.
I have managed to create a boot disk and tryed that. I then get check to see that himem.sys is in your c:\windows directory. It is.

This machine was an old network machine at a bank and as a result the Bios is passworded as well. I thought something in there could be amiss anyone know how to get around this.

yes in your boot floppy make sure you have the sys.com file and when you boot with it type sys c:
and that will put the command.com back into the root directory of c: also to remove the bios password either short the cmos battery by the jumper or take the battery out for about 10 minutes and reinstall it

Boot from the floppy and simply copy command.com to the root directory of the c: drive. If you know the password to the BIOS setup enter the BIOS and disable it. If not you will have to drain the BIOS but make sure you KNOW how each parameter is set (i.e. Cyrix and some AMD must have the CPU set to burst mode to boot). Don Swayser

Thanks

I managed to find a hack site that listed passwords for the BIOS.

On my second attempt I managed to backdoor the password and get in. The BIOS password is now diasabled.

I have copied command.com to the root of c:\ but I still get this command intrepreter problem.

Cheers

well I guess you should sys c:
from the bootable disk
