thought i would pass this on, even though it seems to be a local problem i wonder if it could be systemwide for Comcast

A computer change made this week in Comcast's back-office Internet service disrupted the high-speed cable connection of some of its customers.

The problem only affects subscribers who use routers, said Alexander Steeves, a Comcast spokesman for the Lower Shore. Routers are devices that split an Internet connection so that several computers can use it at once.

"We did an internal equipment upgrade on Monday for our high-speed Internet customers," Steeves said Thursday. "Some customers who use routers have had a hard time getting online."

Stephanie Martin, a Comcast subscriber in Salisbury, said she first noticed difficulty logging onto the Internet Sunday night.

"We've been calling in everyday. They keep saying they're going to get it fixed," Martin said. "It just seems kind of weird that they didn't test it beforehand."

Martin said technical support representatives at Comcast told her the problem likely stemmed from the Windows 98 software on her computer, which they said was incompatible with the new software added to Comcast's machines.

Steeves said the problem was not with Windows 98 but with the physical routers customers may be using.

"The number of customers who use routers is pretty small," Steeves said. "It's a problem that will be resolved."

He said Comcast representatives could help affected customers overcome the problem if their Internet service was spotty.

I can't believe that they say the number of customers using routers is small; almost everyone running a wireless home network is running a router. Typical Comcast, tho.

Since when do you need software installed to get Comcast to work? I never have. They send you a disk of junk to install, but it is useless stuff you don't need.

I guess they meant their servers, but that shouldn't matter.
