I am trying to find out how a inbound E&M trunk is provided from telco via copper. Is there 8 wires from telco? Would I need an E&M card on my Norstar??

Please help

Each E&M card handles (2) trunks each. E&M cards cannot go into the KSU. They must go into trunk modules and are only compatible with Modular ICS & Modular 8X24 phone systems.
You’ll need to order however many E&M tie circuits that you need. Make sure you tell them that you need Type II 4 pair circuits. Norstar will not do Type 1. The facilities interface code (FIC) for this is TL32M.
t - r - t1 - r1 - e - sg - m - sb

Good Luck!!

Could you please explain the pinout definitions following the first two pairs?

Could I be using these trunks as backup to copper DID? If wired properly, will they roll from DID copper to E&M?

E&M trunks are design to connect two switches together not as supplement to DID. Two seperate animals.

E&M are Type II 4 wire (two pair) circuits.
DIDs are Direct Inward Dial standard 2 wire (1 pair)circuits.

What is it you are trying to accomplish exactly? MRoberts

I am installing 5 copper DID trunks. I wanted to have analog lines in an outbound pool as was trying to establish a "Combo" line that could function both as an overflow to the DID trunks and as outbound dialtone. I was told E&M trunks were the way to go..Is that not the case?

With analog DID trunks there isn't any outbound path. You will need to install regular LS/DS or CI trunk cartridges in the cabinet. Those would be configured as line type Pool A in order to have your outgoing paths.

DID cards can only go into trunk modules not in the main KSu cabinet so you have to have at least a 2 port expansion card and one trunk mod. DID cards are 4 lines per card as are the LS/DS cards.

If you want true two way DID lines then you will need to order a T-1 from Telco, have it come in on a DTI card installed in slot 4 in the main KSU cabinet. You will also need either a 6 port combo expansion card or a services card to provide clocking and DTMF receivers for the T-1. Then make sure you tell the Telco you want two way DIDs. When you program the trunks you will configure them E&M and Auto answer.
I think that's where you were getting a little confused. They aren't actually E&M lines but they have to be set up that way in the switch to get the Two way part. But that is only for two way DIDs (or DIODs)coming in via a T-1. MRoberts
