Combo box not updating source table

Access 2000, on Windows XP

Table1
Table2
Query1

Table2 has a combo box bound to query1 (querying Table1). I can select items from the combo box and data is properly stored in Table2. However if I type a value NOT in the combo box, Table1/Query1 is not updated with the new value for the next time the combo box is used (the data is however saved in Table2 - just not in Table1). Is there a way to fix this?

you mean you have a lookup field in the TABLE? you're going to want to read The Evils of Lookup Fields in Tables

ok .... so what are my options for selecting previously used criteria for that field, and yet still having the ability to update the list w/ new entries?

so, you are entering data directly in the table....and if the data doesn't exist in the first table, you want to insert it....you can't do that in tables, you have to develop some kind of user interface that will take advantage of the NotInList event of a combo box....but it has to be on a form, not a table.
