Combining rols on the same server 2

Hello

I'm starting to plan our company's upgrade to 2010 from 2003. Everything Microsoft that I'm reading is saying to use a different server for each role of Exchange. I thought I remember testing this though when it was beta and I put the CAS, HUB, and Mailbox roles all on the same server, and of course the EdgeTransport was it's own box. Is this still possible? Is it supported to combine the CAS, Hub, and Mailbox roles on one box?

Any reason why this is a real bad idea even if it is supported?

That's completely fine and supported. There are some caveats if you're going to do High Availability. But a single server should work fine in most smaller environments.

I'm running 2007 on one machine for about 450 users. When I migrate to 2010, I'll be using one machine as well. As Pat says, aside from HA, it'll work just fine. In fact, I may end up running it all on VMWare.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

Thanks fella's! I actually did end up finding where it talks about all the roles on one, and just FYI incase anyone else out there finds this it's called a typical exchange 2010 installation (combining CAS, HUBt, and Mailbox on one server).

Dave, I'm actually running this entirely on VM as well. Our Exchange 2003 has been a VM since April of 09, never had a problem, plus vRanger makes for some sweet and easy backups/restores..
