Combining http and https on one server

I alluded to this question in a reply to a similar question by another fellow a couple of days ago. Got no answer there yet.

I have one static ip, two vhost domains of http, and I need a couple of secure pages - one each for the two domains (perhaps one will do if need be). I currently have two machines tied up to do what seems one server or computer could easily do.

Is it possible to combine these functions on one machine? Like starting two Apaches - one listening on 80 only and the other listening on 443 only. I don't think it's feasible to get another ip address. Don't know what I'd do with it if I had one.

The previous fellows question was answered: "virtual hosting won't work for http/https. Is my suggestion not workable?

Thanks, Brian

I don't see why you can't do that with one machine running one server with one ip address. The SSL stuff is defined globally in httpd.conf so you just have to enable it for the vhost you want it for. If you want to use the same container that's already defined in httpd.conf, just edit <VirtualHost _Default_:443> to <VirtualHost *:443> and edit all the parameters within that container such as ServerName, ServerAdmin etc. If your version of httpd.conf doesn't have a predifined SSL enabled container, let me know and i can post a copy here for you.

Ok, thanks on those responses. The SSL situation seems to have moved down the priority list for now. The boss isn't sure if he wants to do the on-line monitary thing after all. Now, however, I have a couple of sites which I have moved from our ISP with NT sever with Frontpage extensions to my Apache Win23, and have discovered that the forms are inoperable. Been that way for a couple of months and I didn't discover it till yesterday.

Going to another thread for this one. Thanks again - I'm getting it slowly.
