Com Ports

I have run into a situation where an older software application that I need to use only recognizes Com ports 1-4, but my Compaq laptop starts the available ports at 5 and up. The OS is Windows XP and when I tried to get into the "advanced" section of Com port 6 to change its number, I got a 'need write permission' pop-up. Is there any way to change Windows XP to give myself write permission?

Activate the administrator user (not any admin user - the admin user) the login as administrator and change it.
