com port settings

I'm having a problem with a laptop that needs to be connected to a tractor via a serial port to diagnose problems etc. BUT the tractor diagnostic software will only connect via com port 6. The last techie they had set them up with a serial-usb device which doesnt retain its com port settings if it isnt plugged in to the tractor which isnt always practical. If i use an adapter to change the parallel port to a serial port and then assign it with 03E0-03FF ... will it work? Will it retain the com port 6 setting?
Is there any other way to make win98 keep a com port setting?

If you are using a USB device to connect to the tractor just set the software driver that comes with the USB device to use comm port 6.
