Here is my problem. I have a Dell Laptop computer with Windows XP Home installed. This laptop has no serial port installed. Up to now, I have been using a USB to serial converter, which my computer has designated as COM 7. When using CX Programmer (OMRON) and S7 (SIEMENS), I am allowed to select COM 7 as an option for communicating. My problem is that I am trying to download a program using PROTOOL (SIEMENS) and it only allows me to select either COM 1 or COM 2. I would like to reassign my comm ports so that the USB port will be either com 1 or 2. Is this possible? Thanks, in advance.

Your software is looking for the hardware COM1 and COM2 versions. I'm afraid you will need a more recent software. I've had similar problem, and unless someone has actually coded something to trap a COM and send it to another, your out of luck.

Those Dell Inspiron no longer have built-in COM ports and you must use that horrible Targus one, that is absolute crap... keyboard not working half the time and system hangs during boot up when that device is plugged in. I do not buy models that don't come with docking station options anymore because of the very problem your having.
