After doing a BIOS upgrade on a Supermicro P5STE motherboard with an INTEL 166 processor I can no longer use my modem in Windows 98. Windows recognizes all my hardware fine with no IRQ conflicts. I have a serial mouse on COM1 and IRQ4 (03F8-03FF). My 3Com 56K winmodem gets IRQ12 (0118-011F). When I try to use the modem (startup WinFAX 9.0) I get a message that the com port is already open. This was fine before the BIOS upgrade. There are numerous BIOS settings that I am unsure of (IRQs get PNP or ISA) (OS is PNP or not) etc.. Can anyone help?

Try the easiest solution first. Remove the
modem from Win 98, then physically remove it
from the PC. Set your BIOS to PNP. Use the
defaults for that page. Now insert your modem
and set it up in Windows. Also make sure that
WinFax know what your modem settings are.

DaveGoTech speaks from experience. If the easist solution doesn't work try reinstalling the modem software. I saw an identical error message after upgrading from '95 to '98. Didn't have the disks for my ZOOM modem and had to use system #3 to retrieve the files from the mfg. It worked.
