Com port access

Well my question wasn't answered but I've found new info so I'll rephrase.

I'm trying to run a DOS designed program in WINNT dos prompt. The program needs access to the com port. I thought it might be a dos version problem so I went through the setver command to attempt to fix the problem. The software still loads but still no access to the com port. Is there a com port setting I need to change to make this work? Speed, Parity, I/O port, IRQ???
