My fathers modem stopped working and his netzero software instructed him to uninstall the modem and reinstall it. I am quite sure what he has done is remove com 2 from the device managers list. The modem will now only install on com 1 and "pretends" it's working there, but it is not. The mouse resides on com 1. When I do the install it asks for com port and there is no com2 in the list, only com1 and lpt1. is there a way i can reinstall the communications port I need. When I have it do the modem self test, nothing happens so it's obviously not working. This is on windows 98 with a diamond supraMax 56K modem.

Have you tried using add new hardware in settings?

Control Panel / Ports / Add port

Failing that...

Into the Bios Find the COM Ports... Change Com1 to a any reserved address and make com2 auto select

when i go into the bios there are no com ports listed anywhere from what i can see, but there are serial port 1 and 2...are these com ports? I thought they were not, but I'm not sure. I can try setting serial port 2 to auto, as it is disabled right now...

Yes com ports and serial ports are the same. If you enable com 2 in your bios you will be enabling it to be used with an external device (the connection on the back of your computer). If you want to use an internal modem with com 2, do not enable it in the bios. Install it through "add new hardware" in windows control panel.
