I have been asked to replace the loud colors in a complex raster drawing of an aircraft's components with more subtle colours. I know how to use 'replace colors', but the problem is, whenever I choose one of the colours I am to replace, even with a very small tolerance, invariably there will be some black, and therefore I lose some of the definition in the black lines that delineate one area from the other, and also the text labels which are black. The problem gets worse and worse as I replace more of the colours. In addition, none of the present loud colours that have been used are a 'pure' colour but consist of many different shades of the colour e.g. the hot pink contains everything from pale pink through to almost dark purple with every colour in between!
I thought of converting a copy of the original into a 1-bit drawing in order to save the outlines and text and using it as an extra layer on top of the one in which the colours had been replaced, but found that even in the coloured areas, there was black (which explained why the replace colour function was making the black areas paler and paler). The time taken to clean up the black from these areas would have taken far too long to even contemplate. I also cannot redraw the diagram from scratch (by tracing) as it is too complex and there are too many areas not well enpough defined when I zoom in to even see where the lines are supposed to go.
