Hi,

We have a problem where a colour is chosen for text (say #FF0000, bright red) but on the image the text takes on a colour verified by the colour picker as #E34321, which is a digusting dull colour.

What are we doing wrong?

I'm guessing you're probably working in CMYK colour mode. This colour mode is designed for print work, and I don't think the colour picker will allow you to choose colours that fall outside the CMYK gamut, and will probably correct them accordingly.

I'm not that familiar with it as I never work in CMYK mode(I never do any print work), but the colours that will not be available in CMYK will be the bright ones unfortunately. You just can't make a red as bright as #ff0000 by mixing cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

Is what you're doing for the web? If so you need to set your documents to RGB colour mode when you create them (or convert the ones you've already created).

That is exactly right! I changed back to RGB and the colours were great! Thanks for that, it really had us scratching our heads. What we are trying to do is design a logo for our web design business which will be used in print and of course on the web.

Thanks a million

If you are designing a logo which you intend using for print as well as web, then please do it in Illustrator, not Photoshop. AI has the advantage in that (1) it's in vector format, so resolution will never be an issue and (2) it's easier to assign spot colours, which many logos have for print work. You can always save a copy of the vector logoo in raster format (probably GIF) for use on your website.

Thanks for that. I don't have Illustrator yet but it is top of my list for next purchase. It is interesting what you say about vector format etc. I look forward to learning a lot more about this sort of thing. I am familair with Flash etc but have never had the opportunity to get into graphics properly. Now that we have our own business, I guess we'll have to (sink or swim)
