what woudl be the best way to change the color of my output from a shell script???

silly question i know, but i have never run into this before.

There's a FAQ in the awk forum on this subject : faq271-2920
It depends upon your terminal emulator, too
try :
echo '\033[5;41;1;37m *** STOP *** \033[0m'

for starters
