Colorado T1000e: Can't see device

We need (urgently, as ever) to retrieve some date from a 1998 backup tape that was created on a T1000e (which we have). I've installed the original software and driver (which was windows 95) on a Windows 98SE machine. The first time I did it I could actually see the tape drive but when it came to read it it crashed the software. Since then I;ve re-installed the software and drivers AND added the latest (1997) drivers. But all to no avail. I can even see the tape drive now (although the system rteports all the drivers are working fine).

If anyone has any suggestions at all it would be helpful.
