color to transparant?

Hello, i want to make an image that goes from full color on the left side to transparant on the right side, kinda like the gradient tool. I dont mean 'feather', cause this makes soft edges all around the pictures.
Any idea how i can do this?

You will have your picture on a layer.
Add a layer above.
Use the gradient tool and the 'foreground to transparent' setting.
Drag the tool over the layer in the direction you want the gradient to occur.
Turn off the gradient layer In the layers palette.
Make the image layer active.
Command/click the gradient layer in the layers palette to make a selection. Hit delete.
Experiment with the gradient position to get the exact effect you want.
