Is there a way to make color separations in InDesign including an imported Photoshop (RGB) graphic. The printer I'm working with is asking for color separations, and those as PDFs.

Is there such a thing? Is there a way to do this?

Thank you

Get a new printer if they cannot create separations from a PDF file. A decent printer should be able to produce separations from a composite PDF file exported from InDesign.

If you are using the full version of Acrobat 6 or 7, you can print to PDF from InDesign. The InDesign print dialog will allow you to specify separations.

This must be one incompetent arrogant printer. It's not the job of the designer/page layout guy to provide separations. My guess is that he's too cheap to get the necessary software to do seps out of pdf. I've had some printers like that, but I could just send them the ID package - solving the problems. This turkey probably doesn't have ID either.

I can do this with ID, but I also have Acrobat Pro 6. I don't know if the settings come with just ID or whether they require full Acrobat.

If you absolutely must, try this. Go to the Print command in ID. On the first window select, under Printer, Postscript file. Under PPD pick Adobe PDF. You might also see if there's a prebuilt print setting for Postscript to PDF.

Now click on Output in the Print settings selections on the left of the window.

Under Color, select Separations. That will activate the drop down menus below - trapping, flip, screening You'll have to ask this idiot printer how he wants these settings. Once you get what he needs, give it a name & save as a print preset. At the bottom of the Print/output window you get your 4 CMYK colors (plates). Print 1 pdf for each color, remembering to give them names.

Again, this is NOT supposed to be your job.
