Hi LoYBoY. Well, it's nice to know I'm not alone with this issue. I don't fool around with incrementals anymore. ARCserve doesn't stick to that for very long - plays nicely for a few days, then falls back to full dumps before it's supposed to. I just do a full dump every night - what the heck, as long as it's done before morning.... My current CA tech support has tried to keep me happy by requesting logs, .ncfs, etc. and keeps reassuring me (with the exact same form e-mail- imagine that!) that he's studying all my information. I've had issues with ARCserve in the past and usually get my answers right here from these fine tek-tip cruisers.
Here's what I've done so far.
1. I found and implemented good btrieve info at this CA URL:
2. Since I'm using a DLT autochanger Tape Library, I removed NWTAPE.cdm and another novell tape driver (I'm at home right now...) from Startup.NCF and renamed the files. This was suggested by CA tech support because they've recently perfected their own drivers but there's a conflict if Novell drivers are loaded too.
3. Hi TheLad. These next items are in response to your excellent questions. I have tried backing up with both IP and IPX. Same problem. TSA500 and TSANDS are both loaded on all servers to be backed up. And yes, there are Read/Write replicas of the other servers on the ARCserve server. I assume they don't have to be Masters.... but thanks for asking, TheLad. I appreciate the tips.
4. My most recent suggestion by CA tech support is what I said before. Remove the cumlative SP2, put on QO05996 (SP1) and a couple of others (again, I'm at home - don't remember which ones). The point is, I already know that will work, my last ARCserve setup was before SP2 and I didn't have this problem (same hardware) - but of course there were other issues.... Sigh, 2 giant steps back....
5. Currently, I'm not using NWagent (to do a pre/post gstop & gstart before & after backing up the mail server) on my GroupWise server. My backups seem fine (as long as I keep agents out of the mix) and the post office seems to be fully backed up. What am I missing here? I thought that the post office could not be properly backed up without either the GroupWise agent or Netware agent to locally shut down the post office first. I've been able to restore NWguard, ofuser files, & other random post office files. It doesn't show any skipped files in the log.
6. Here's why I'm so annoyed by this problem. When ARCserve hits the NWagent on the mailserver, I have the agent perform a local PRE-backup job command, GSTOP, to shut down the GroupWise agents. Then the job hangs all night and GroupWise is down (GSTART never happens). Some of my users begin their workday 2 hours before I do. So this has caused a decrease in user confidence in the mail system - when it first began. It's pretty bad when you're trying to encourage them to use the GroupWare tools and they wonder why they should bother when they don't feel confident that it will be available. I'm not interested in testing this irritating issue on my live system. AND, my weekends have been wasted because short tests work fine (go figure!).
Ok, my rant is over. I will keep you posted when I've got something worthwile to share.
