Hello,

When I import, paste, or place anything from Illustrator into Photoshop, the colour always appears lighter than it did when I was working in Illy.

What causes this and how can I correct it?

Thanks.

First make sure that both of the apps are set to either cmyk or rgb.

If you use Pantone colors, use Pantone Solids in Illustrator or Indesign and Solid to Process in Photoshop.

There's an easy test for this. Open an ILL doc make a box and fill it with a Pantone solid. Open a PSd doc, make a box and fill it with the same pantone solid. Bring the PS thing into the Ill doc and check the cmyk and.or rgb values by using the eyedropper tool. You'll find them different. Then go back to PS and change the colored box to Pantoned solid to process and bring that into the Ill doc. Check the value cmyk and/or rgb vaues for that box and you'll find they match.

Interesting. Thanks, jmgalvin. So when I bring something into Photoshop from Illustrator, should I just expect the colours to look different on screen? Or is there something I can do about that?

If I design a title in Illy then place that title in Photoshop and it appears lighter... what can I expect when printing?

If you bring Ill into PS try the eyedropper to pick up that color and add to your swatches, Just check the the cmyk/rgb values on the PS color pallette.

Again, it's vital that both apps be in either cmyk or rgb color mode when objects are created.

It matches the color brought into the PS doc.

Just to add to that...

As well as making sure both apps use the same color mode (rgb / cmyk), you should also make sure that your color settings are the same in both apps. The whole concept of color management can be confusing at the best of times, but if you go to the "Color Settings..." menu items in both apps, make sure all the settings are the same.

The Color Settings menu item tends to move around a bit, but depending on your OS / version, it could be under Edit, or else the Photoshop menu under MacOS. Check out the following link about setting up a color-managed workflow:
