I have aquired a used color laserjet 5m. Upon starting up,
the unit goes through self test and the message "54.4 engine error" appears on the display. This was a working unit prior to shipping, as the test page that was sent with the unit indicates so. What does this error mean?

If the printer has been moved or has not been properly supported on all four feet, it is possible for an interlock to become bent. Open the top cover of the printer. The metal tab is located on the right side of the printer, just to the rear of the print drum. The sheet metal piece should come out perpendicular from the frame that holds the developer. Then make a 90-degree bend to point directly down. If the part is bent at a different angle, it will not make contact with the interlock switch. Either bend the sensor back to the 90-degree angle or call service

The 54.4 error is caused by the m6 motor in the printer not getting up to speed on time. The only option that you have is to cycle the power on the printer, If this does not work, try a cold reset (switch on while holding the online button down. If this does not solve the issue, you may need to replace the formatter and Laser scanner assy in the unit, which due to the age of the printer may not be cost effective
