I ran into this problem before but can't remember how I resolved it. I installed my wife's 2 HD's into a new tower. Alas, it will only display 2 or 16 colors and I'm haviving a tough time trying to find the driver/s I need for better resolution. Below isthe profile I was given after running Belarc Advisor:

Operating System: Windows 98 SE (build 4.10.2222) Compaq System Model: Compaq PC X2.0

Processor a:
1000 megahertz AMD Athlon
128 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Main Circuit Board: Compaq 0650h A2
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies Ltd. 4.0 06/02/2000

Controllers:
Standard Floppy Disk Controller
Plus Hardcard II [Controller]
Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller

Display:
Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) [Display adapter]
MAG 771FS-s [Monitor] (15.7"vis, s/n FAIU48225216U, August 2004)
MAG InnoVision DX15F [Monitor]

Bus Adapters:
PCI Universal Serial Bus
VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller

She uses it only for reading E-mail & playing games but I go for back surgery in a week so time is a factor. Any help in steering me to the right site to download the necessary drivers would be greatly appreciated.

I need more info on the Compaq model number. That model doesn't compute. Check on the back or front for a different number.

Maybe go into the BIOS or watch as the system boots to see if there is any info about the graphics card, otherwise we need a Compaq model that computes on their web site.

Try the number here to confirm.

An obvious graphics driver problem but unfortunately the information provided doesn't give us mut to go on.
If I were a betting man lol and reading between the lines....alot....this Compaq appears to be based on a Via chipset.
Taking this one step further....if this has built in "onboard graphics" circa year 2000 then it is likely based on a KM266 or older KM133a chipset so......
S3 PRO Savage.... 2nd or 3rd from the bottom of this driver page.

If this doesn't help we need further info, especially about the graphics chip.
You may also need to install platform drivers...Via 4in1's ?

Sorry! I should have reviewed my post before submitting it. [blush] The PC is a Compaq Presario 7000 Series model 7AP195 with 1GHz AMD Athalon processor & 16MB NVIDIA TNT2 graphics. The tower was given to me by a client. The company he worked for upgraded all their PC's & allowed him to take his old PC home but not after gutting the HD. He decided not to install a new HD, etc. so left it to me. Thanks for those sites. I'll be checking them out shortly.
