We have 1601 router connecting us to our ISP. The Ethernet side has over 13K collisions since I reset the counters yesterday. Is this level acceptable and what could be causing these errors? Our 2501 in the same office shows 7K collisions also.

If your 1601 is connected to a hub along with any other device collisions are normal as they are all on the same collision domain. Ethernet is a shared media where one device 'listens' if there is activity if not starts to send a frame. Sometimes two devices will start to send at the same time. This causes a collision. If you want to get rid of collisions you have to use a switch. A switch creates a separate collision domain for each of its switched ports.

How many devices are on your ethernet?

You need to be more concerned with frequecy of the collisions. If they take up too much of your bandwidth, performance will suffer due to congestion and re-transmissions. A sniffer is very handy for this but a poor mans way to is to stay connected to the router and manually watch the counters either by refreshing or by using a SNMP tool that can query the MIB for this info.
