collision detection

so, i'm trying to make a video game right. I"m new to flash, but I've been programming for quite some time. basically in the game, you control a car through a sidescrolling town to a finish line, while doing your best to avoid random obstacles. I've got the car and obstacles, but i am almost completely lost on detecting the collision between the two. can someone please help me?

Use a search engine with words such has Flash 5+colision detection+hit test+tutorial...
