Collating Multiple-page print jobs doesn't work

When you print multiple copies of a multiple-page document in Office 97, and you select the Collate check in the print dialog box, only one copy of the document gets printed.

Anyone know how to fix this? Microsoft was NO help, their technical document Q253864 does not work.
Printing to a HP5si printer, I tried the Win2K(P) drivers, and I tried the PCL5, PCL6 drivers from HP, to no avail.

Any suggestions?
