Can anyone describe the comparisons between Cognos and Business Objects. We are going to do Health Project and client needs the difference briefly.

Thanks

Cognos Are World Leaders in BI and there Support is second to none! trust me....

In our evaluation we found that overall Cognos was the better fit due to its scalability and breadth and depth of solution.

I have evaluated both Cognos and BO. I work in an IT organization in Northern NJ. Just from the outset, Cognos showed tremendous customer support. They have 3 offices in the tri-state area (PA, NJ, NY). BO sent partners...having no office around. It set the tone for the evaluation to come.

BO has a good reporting tool, don't get me wrong....but that's all they have. They just couldn't meet Cognos at the table when it came to OLAP or Scorecarding. Out of the box, we have a Cognos application running Managed Reporting (IWR), fast OLAP analysis (PowerPlay Enterprise Server) and an executive EIS system (Visualizer). Great end-to-end solution. BO just isn't there.

I have been in IT for more than 25 years. I have yet to see a more integrated solution than that of what Cognos has to offer. There customer support is the best in business. I have tried BO and IBI and would recommend Cognos above and beyond those providers.

what do you guys think about MicroStrategy? Other than their silly corporate moves, their software seems to be getting good reviews from Gartner.

Greetings,

I have evaluated both Cognos and Business Objects. Cognos Business Suite is very wide whereaas BO is not.

Adv of Cognos over BO:
----------------------

Even in the simple reporting part Cognos has several features than BO.

BO has a reporting module with few OLAP features implemeted in that. But this doesn't cover the entire OLAP features.

Cognos Business suite is huge. They have a basic reporting tool(IWR, Impromptu), OLAP reporting (Powerplay) and also provide a ETL tool(Decision Stream).

They have their properitory Metadata Management tool(Cognos Architect) where you can maintain the Metadata accross the
Cognos Products.

Adv of BO over Cognos:

Construction of Basic reporting is simple.
Cost wise BO is lower than Cognos.
If basic reporting is the only need then BO is a simple and webi is also very simple to develop.

Thanks,
Badhri ...

nlim,
Microstrategy has a pretty robust tool-set. High end OLAP is great; doesn't get overwhelmed by too many categories at any level of a dimension. However, I must say, I'm not a ROLAP supporter, generally speaking.
However, my only word of warning about Microstrategy is their current finanical situation. A compnay that has had "questionable" accounting practices even before Enron, sinking from $300+ a share to $.49 a share is a risky venture, especially with the reverse stock split coming up. We ran a D&B report on all three Vendors (BO, Cognos and Microstrategy) during our evaluation and in a scale from 1 - 9 (1 being best, 9 being "in danger of colapse"), Microstrategy scored a 9.
If you're going to make a significant, enterprise-wide BI purchase, go with Cognos or even BO.....they'll be here for sure 5 years from now.
