Cognos V8 Licencing

Hi All,
We need to start work on a new Cognos V8 project, for which we have got installable for Framework Manager and are purchasing the Cognos V8 BI Professional licence from Cognos directly.

My question is to build reports, will the Cognos Connection software already be present along with the BI Professional licence ??

Also, what is the role of Cognos BI server in V8 ? Is this only for administration of users / access rights etc ?

AFAIK the Cognos server plays a major part in re-compiling queries to the various databases (UDA) and has a much larger role than merely administration/security.
It may also play a role in local processing of a query request.

Cognos 8's basics is the Cognos 8 BI server cd.
After installing that, you get the BI server which includes Cognos Connection as it's portal.
For development you need to install the BI Modeling cd (framework manager) to built packages to publish to the Cognos 8 BI server in order to be displayed in Cognos Connection.
In the capabilities of the portal you are support to create and link the users according to the licenses you have.

With your description you have framework manager which cannot connect to a BI server and a BI professional which sounds as a license for a role inside an existing BI server.

As Cognos8 is has role based licensing model you heve to make a sharp distinction between cd's and licences
As you tell, you have bought a BI profesional licence. This means you are entitled to use all studios but not to use framework manager, for wich you need an administrator license
