Are the model/package information stored in some sort of tables? Basically was wondering to create some report which will give the list of data items and other infortmation used in the package.

The package is stored in binary format within the Content Store, so you have no chance to query it.

The only way to get those information is using the SDK developing a custom application.

The model is stored in a set of files. The model.xml contains all dataitems etc.
In the past we had a xsl stylesheet to 'read' the xml contents.
Worked reasonably well, there is also third-party software for a hefty price
