Hi.. I am new to Cognos and I have a project on hand where I need to design a cognos reporting solution for analytical needs of a retail company. The reporting sources are Financial application on Oracle APPS(a transactional system). Can anyone outline me what are the steps to be taken in starting of on this project.

From an oversimplified perspective what you need to do are:
- requirements gathering, what are you trying to achieve
- dimensional modelling (often through a JAD session), how to people organize the dimensions and measures that they want to view? Is that data available
- develop a logical cube design
- develop a data mart design
- obtain extract files
- transform extracts (etl)
- build underlying cognos objects (impromptu cat, transformer model.
- test, test, test
- refine as needed
- document
- deliver
