We were getting the following error message every so often and could not figure out the issue

A fatal Scheduler error has occurred.
Schedule.mdb

I noticed that another user was logging in to the computer using a remote desktop session - and that was causing another instance of the scheduler to run. This caused the desktop session of the scheduler to crash (I think).

You've indeed answered your own question; that error occurs when two instances of scheduler are trying to update the same job database. If there'll be more than one user logging into the server, it'd be better to trigger scheduler to start on boot-up/restart or at a certain time, rather than on log-on.
