When summing up values, does Impromptu sum them on the database or on the report?
I have a report which shows summary quantities, but to my surprise i found that though the report showed only the summary, it did actually bring in all the records and then summed them in the report.
Does anyone have a clue as to when Impromptu sums up on the report, and when it sums on the database?

Thanks
Bob

Bob,

The summing of data depends on your specification. If you choose to sum according to the catalog columns in your query, then it will sum up on the database side. If you choose report columns in your query, it will use the report results for the summation. I hope this helps.

Bob,

Where summing occurs is dependent on the level of data returned by the query and the use, if any, of locally processed functions. If you want the database to do the summing (desireable in many circumstances), make sure that the Auto Group checkbox is checked in the Group tab of the Report | Query dialog. Remember that every report query column that is not itself based on an aggregate function will be part of the grouping. You will know this is successful when a "Group By" clause appears in the resulting SQL as seen in the Profile tab - SQL button of the Report | Query dialog.

You may also turn on Database-only processing under the Client/Server tab of the dialog, but this will reduce the number of functions available and the general flexibility of the report.

Hope this helps,

Dave Griffin
