Cognos Excel output taking More time!!

Hi all
iam facing a issue while running a report to view the output in excel format it takes more than 1hour.
Wheras the same quer hardly takes 3 to 5 mins time in sql .
The number of rows retrieved is around 250000..

where will be the problem if iam able to get output in sql a very short time.

The "problem" will be in the Excel rendering engine. You don't say what Cognos product you're using, but I know from experience that Impromptu saves on 16,383 or 65,535 lines per tab, depending on what export version selected (2000 or 2002). 2002 format takes noticeably longer both to export and to open in Excel.

May I ask why you need a quarter of a million rows in Excel format? Surely such volume should be dumped out as csv and then imported into Excel?
