We are using Cognos Powerplay 6.0 and have had problems rebuilding the cubes because we now have several dimensions with more than 65,000 members, which is the limit for Cognos' cubes for this version.
Some dimensions we can add additional attributes creating a lower level of granularity. But others it will not be appropriate.
We are also considering doing some aggregations outside the cube.
I am looking for other workarounds.

The limitation that you are reffering to is the maximum amoutn of child categories, which is 65535. This can easily be avoided by inserting another level in that dimension, which of course, could be either a manual level or one that comes directly from a data source.

For example, say that the dimension that has too many child categories is the customer dimension and looks something like this:

Customers
=========
Country
Region
City
Customer Name

You could insert a new level from a data source, let's say zip code/postal code. Of course your data would have to support this and you may have to change your underlying query.

Customers
=========
Country
Region
City
Zip code/ Postal code
Customer Name

OR you could insert a manual level and alphabetize your client list where you would create a new level called a-z and then create categories for letter ranges (A-F, G-M, N-S, T-Z for example). Generate the categories, and then manaully drag them into their proper container.

Customers
=========
Country
Region
City
A-Z (manual level)
Customer Name

Hope this helps.
