Cognos 8 Substring Function - Really Slow

Hi,

I'm just wondering whether anybody in the forum has experienced a decline in report execution when using Substrings. A report that would generally run in a minute without Substring, runs forever with Substring.

Did you check how adding the substring function changes the executed SQL? Normally the netto effect on database execution is negligible. However if the Cognos server itself is involved this may be quite a different case.

If you can define string functions in the metadata layer (framework/catalogue) performance should be optimal..
