Cognos 8 Services don't start after Server Updater install.

I am stumpped. After Cognos8.1.209.74 (Reportnet -Query Studio Report studio, and FM only)install on WIN2K3, MSSQLSvr2000, and everything works fine except one report. cognos says install C8 server updater () to fix a problem with validating a report out of a pkg that was imported from CRN 1.1.
When you install the updater, you are supposed to stop C8 service, which I did, anad install the updater, and then save the cognos config, then start the C8 service.
The C8 service now won't start.
Looking at the details, I see:

1. 09:19:20, 'LogService', 'StartService', 'Success'.
CM-CFG-5063 A content Manager configuration error was detected while connecting to the content store.
CM-CFG-5040 Content Manager cannot load object class definitions from the content store.
CM-CFG-5048 The field EVENTID is missing from the property CMProperty.
3. 09:19:26, 'com.cognos.pogo.contentmanager.coordinator.ActiveCMControl', 'pogo', 'Failure'.
4. 09:19:26, 'ContentManagerService', 'StartService', 'Failure'.
DPR-CMI-4006 Unable to determine the active Content Manager. Will retry periodically.

and so on...

When doing a TEST at high level of cognos config, it tests out fine. Still can't start service.

Cognos 8 was working before the updater.

Anyone encounter this?

ok, fixed, I had to make sure that certain processes were not running at the time of the updater. duh. moving right along...
