Cognos 8 BI upgrade

I assigned to a new role as a Cognos administrator. I have previous Impromptu and PP developer experience. Now I need to upgrade existing Cognos version 7 to Cognos version 8. Can I live Cognos 7 or I need to remove it?
Could you help me and specify the steps for this process. Thanks in advance.

The best thing to do is to remove older versions of Cognos.
Although you can always install into a different directory if this is prod. I would highly recommend to wipe the server clean and then install.
