Is there a problem with defining an absolute width to the body tag? This is something I've done for quite some time now, but a colleague thinks this is somehow wrong (although he couldn't give me a reason why).

thanks!

There is no problem with assigning an absolute width to the body if you are using XHTML, IMHO. I say this for XHTML because the HTML element is the canvas, not the BODY element. In HTML, the BODY element is the canvas, in which case, a page container is an appropriate solution.

This is a question of opinion and there is no definitive answer, as far as I know.

Putting an absolute width on the body is like putting jam in a sock. It's something that you'd do if you had a reason. If you have no reason to do it, then why do it?

Hope this helps,
Dan
