Code or control to list a directory contents?

Hello,

I want to be able to list the contents of a directory on a local server using a web page.

I'm using Frontpage 3 (stop laughing), and have looked at activex controls like list view or treeview, but I can't see how to put the data in them - I just get empty boxes.

I'd rather use these controls than say an Iframe, as I want to control the way the data is shown - default seems to be a long vertical line of Icons, I want to have a proper file list.

Any suggestions? A pointer as to how to get the activex control to list a particular dierctory would be ideal.

Hi mate,

If you can use SSI then the following code will show the directory listing.

On Unix,
<pre>
<!--#exec cmd=&quot;ls&quot; -->
</pre>

or, on Windows

<pre>
<!--#exec cmd=&quot;dir&quot; -->
</pre>

Thanks Wullie, unfortunately that's not what I need, although it's my fault for not being clear.

I negelected to say that I want the user to be able to select files.

I've got it solved in a way with the Iframe, but it just displays using whatever default view there happens to be on the local machine.

What I want to do is specify a detailed view (as opposed to icons) and be able to specify how the files are sorted. The Iframe doesn't have any parameters for that kind of thing.

It's proving a tricky task. I've been scouring the internet for 2 days, but can't find any clear instructions on activex controls - what I really need is an example.

Hi mate,

Do you have access to the server config?

If so and if the server is Apache, then you have a lot of control over the directory listings that the server produces.

Yes, I do. This is all for our local network, so no probs there. We're only using IIS though, but I think your idea is pointing me in the right direction.

I think I'm probably biting off more than I can chew though - I'll stick with the Iframe for now, and get myself a book . . .
