code equivalent of group sort expert

Is it possible to do a "select Top N * from mytable" where the user will be prompted for the TOP N as opposed to having them go through the group sort expert?

Not sure about that, but an alternative is to create a discrete number parameter for topN, and assuming your records are sorted in descending order and topN on the summary field is set to "All", you can format sections to suppress with a formula:

groupnumber > {?topN}
