Code 39 font problem

Hi, I am creating some basic barcodes with a code 39 font. They work great unless the first number is a "1". With a 1-sometimes it is scannable sometimes it isn't. Could this be a problem with the scanner or do you think it's a problem with the barcode? Thanks in advance!

Can it read a "1" reliably if it is not the first character?

Yes, it can read a 1 as long as it isn't the first number. Any ideas?

Are you printing to a laser, barcode, or dot matrix printer?

Can you get a barcode generated elsewhere to test your scanner?

I really am at a loss, other than a badly formed 1 that somehow interferes with the leading '*'.

Do you have a preamble character set in the scanner setup?
 
Font quality is important to your business. There are many Code39 fonts, some are even free. But many have bad quality and the barocdes generated not scannable at all. It eventually costs you more money. I recommend a good barcode font source:
