Amazingly enough, we seem to have a lot of COBOL code that I would consider poor, i.e. the overall structure is poor and is hard to understand what the program's doing.

Are there any tools that can examine a program and output a more meaningful view of the structure, e.g. in diagram form, that would aid with understanding the program? Ideally a free or cheap tool would be best, but I'd be happy to check other more mainstream solutions too.

There are two relatively inexpensive utilities I use to look at old COBOL programs. First (and favorite) is Visustin, which will look at a COBOL program and can give you a selection of diagrams. The second is Power Structure.

Of course, there's always Micro Focus Revolve, though it is fairly pricey.

Thanks for the tips. I was aware of Revolve and Power Structure, but not Visustin, which looks quite useful.
