Cob: error(s) in assembling /var/tmp/cob8262/%cob0.s 1

While trying to link using cob -x on NCR UNIX after installing cobol 4.0 we get the following error & the executable is not created.
cob: can not execute as
cob: error(s) in assembling /var/tmp/cob8262/%cob0.s

This however generates the int file. Tried running this int file using COBRUN, but get errors in opening the ISAM files.

It might be a "PATH" problem. Make sure that the "as" modules can be executed.
