I will be creating a brochure that will be mostly cmyk (photos) and graphics with 1 metalic spot ink. I will most likely send the final file to the printer as a PDF. Any advise appreciated to avoid any problems with separation. I have never worked with both CMYK and spot colours together in same document.

Should not be any problem. The spot will just separate out as its own separation. You can check this via ID Window menu/Output Preview/Separations. You can also preview the separatins in Acrobat via Advanced menu/Separations.

The only thing is that its helpful to use a Pantone for the spot to prevent surprises as to color on the final print.

Using OSX 10.3.8 on a G4

Thanks for the advise. I didn't think it would be a big deal, but just don't want any problem calls from the printer.
