We have a client that has a huge site that they would like a CMS for.

They have a custom one that has been hacked to pieces and ready for an upgrade.

is it possible to add a third party CMS to a well established site or do you have to write a custom one.

Thanks

Ummm, we have a bit of a problem here....

jojo11, well it all depends.

I personally don't like using 3rd party CMS for an existing site because no matter how good the 3rd party CMS is unless its customised for your needs getting it work is a pain. The amount of time you would spend on tweaking the 3rd party CMS to intergrate within your site you could write one yourself.

My old job had a huge site that they bought some 3rd party CMS, needless to say, we wound up writing one anyways cause the amount of time we spent tweaking to intergrate one section was too long.

Eveyone has different feelings on this, obviously since people still buy 3rd party applications and whatnot.

You should ask yourself this:
1) How much of the CMS can be intergrated within the current site (without tweaking)? If its more then 70% then it might be worth it.
2) Does the CMS do what your boss wants right out-of-the-box, or will you need to tweak it to get it do what you want?
3) Will this 3rd party vendor help in tweaking the CMS?
