Clustering a Weblogic Portal?

Anyone tried to cluster a Weblogic7 Portal? We have started looking at it, but one of the concerns is that we are using Pointbase for portal configuration and personalization data. Can more than one Portal instance grab this data from the same Pointbase instance? Normally Pointbase starts from the same scripts that start the Portal instance, but is it ok to start it independently (so it's not tied to the running state of a managed server)? Any other notes or experiences would be appreciated.
