Clustered bar chart transforms itself

I've developed a clustered bar chart in Crystal Reports 8.5 using ODBC that seems to transform itself to an unclustered chart whenever all the groups have only one bar in them. That wouldn't be so bad, except the colors are reassigned to a unique color for each group, and the bars become "fat". So the chart looks nothing at all like the original setup. When I run the chart with multi-group data it works just dandy. So it appears to be the chart reacting in a goofy way to the lack of groupings coming in with the data.

Does anybody out there know how to force the chart to stay in clustered mode? Or is this yet another "undocumented feature" in Crystal's charting module?

Thanks in advance....
